AP source: Reyes, Marlins agree at $106 million (AP)

DALLAS ? Jose Reyes is speeding to the suddenly splurging Miami Marlins.

The All-Star shortstop became the second top free agent to land with the Marlins in a matter of days, agreeing Sunday night to a $106 million, six-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

After adding All-Star closer Heath Bell for $27 million over three years, the Marlins gave the NL batting champion a deal that includes a club option for 2018 that would make the contract worth $120 million, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not yet been announced.

Preparing to move into a $515 million retractable-roof ballpark, the Marlins hired Ozzie Guillen as their manager and have become a driving force in the market ahead of the winter meetings, which start Monday. With Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols the remaining high-profile hitters on the market, they hope to land another big bat. Pujols, like Reyes, already has toured the new stadium ? which opens when the Marlins host the Cardinals on April 4.

Reyes is following Francisco Rodriguez and Carlos Beltran out of New York, leaving David Wright and Johan Santana as the Mets' last remaining stars. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson began hearing rumors of the deal Sunday afternoon.

"If the numbers are what are speculated and Jose does leave us, I don't think people will be surprised that under those circumstances he went elsewhere. It doesn't mean they'll be happy about it," said Alderson, who spoke with Reyes' agents earlier in the day. "There was an indication to me that things were moving. Exactly how far. I didn't ask. I didn't need to."

Reyes signed with New York at age 16 and last year become the Mets' first NL batting champion, when he hit .337 and topped the league with 16 triples, while stealing 39 bases.

The 28-year-old is a four-time All-Star and three-time stolen base champion. But he has been prone to injuries in recent seasons, particularly to his hamstrings. He has not played more than 133 games in any of the last three years, averaging 98.

His arrival in Miami, where the Marlins will be wearing new brightly colored uniforms, likely means three-time All-Star Hanley Ramirez will be shifting from shortstop to third base.

Reyes received the second-nine figure deal of the offseason, following center fielder Matt Kemp's $160 million, eight-year contract to stay with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Reyes' departure is another blow to the Mets, who went 77-85 in their third straight losing season. Attendance at Citi Field dropped to 2.35 million, down about 7 percent from last year and their lowest since 2004, when they played at Shea Stadium.

Alderson said the Mets never made a formal offer to Reyes, who is coming off a deal that paid him $32.4 million over five years.

"I don't believe Mets' fans will be surprised if these reports are true that Jose may not be back," he said. "You have to draw a line somewhere and based on our experience, not just with Jose ? but with multiyear contracts generally, and not just with our multiyear contracts, but all multiyear contracts generally ? we decided that there were some conceptual limitations to where we would go."

Alderson became general manager when Omar Minaya was fired after the 2010 season. The Wilpon family that owns the Mets has been sued by the trustee trying to recover money for the victims of the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme, and he is seeking to recover up to $386 million from the Mets' ownership group.

"Bernie Madoff and his specter are always referenced in these situations. I really don't really think that Madoff has that much to do with this," Alderson said. "But when a team loses $70 million, irrespective of Bernie Madoff or anyone else, that's probably a bigger factor in our approach to this season and the next couple than anything else."

Alderson wouldn't say whether the $70 million figure was for 2011 only.

"Big losses, let's put it that way," he said.

With Reyes gone, Ruben Tejada becomes the Mets' projected starting shortstop.

"We don't expect him to be Jose Reyes," Alderson said. "At some point, he will be what he can be as a player."

In a matter-of-fact 20-minute briefing, Alderson didn't concede the 2012 season would be a loss and maintained the departure wouldn't lead to a total rebuilding.

"I don't think anything that Jose does or doesn't do over the next few days has any impact on David Wright," Alderson said. "Right now, we don't contemplate trading David Wright."

Plextor outs M3S SSD: SATA III and an 'ironclad' five-year warranty from $199

Harken to the news of Plextor's latest 2.5-inch SSD, which beats previous offerings with three things you can't complain about: a lower price, a modest spec bump and an extra two annums beyond the usual three-year warranty. The M3S employs SATA III and a Marvell controller to deliver speeds of 525MB/s and 445MB/s for sequential reads and writes, and 70,000 and 65,000 IOPS for random reads and writes. The lowest 128GB capacity will sell for $200 from the end of this month, alongside a 256GB variant for $350 and -- from early next year -- 512GB for $700. The company's proprietary True Speed software is also in attendance, which claims to preserve "like-new" rapidity even as the drive fills up with fragmented data. You'll find further specs in the PR after the break, but alas it has none of the third-person narrative flair we saw last time.

Stocks slip as Italian bond sale renews euro fears (AP)

NEW YORK ? The stock market fell Monday after a jump in Italy's borrowing costs reminded investors of how much work remains to be done to contain Europe's debt problems.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost nearly 75 points. Bank stocks fell the most. European markets also fell and the euro weakened against the dollar.

Major indexes closed higher last week as Greece and Italy moved to form new governments and took other decisive steps to get their debt troubles under control. However worrisome signs re-emerged Monday.

The Italian government had to pay 6.29 percent at an auction of five-year bonds, the highest rate since since 1997. Italy paid a much lower rate of 5.32 percent at a similar auction last month. That's a sign investors are still concerned about Italy's ability to repay its debts. Stocks tanked last Wednesday after key Italian borrowing rates jumped above 7 percent, a level widely seen as unsustainable.

Also Italy's biggest bank, Unicredit, reported a $14.4 billion loss.

"The problems these countries are dealing with go well beyond their prime ministers," said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at the brokerage BTIG. "Italy didn't get where it is in five minutes. And it's not going to get out of where it is in five minutes. This is going to take months."

The Dow fell 74.70 points, or 0.6 percent, to close at 12,078.98. Bank of America Corp. fell 2.6 percent and JPMorgan Chase & Co. fell 2.2 percent, the largest drops among the 30 large companies in the Dow.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 12.06 points, or 1 percent, to 1,251.79. The Nasdaq composite index fell 21.53, or 0.8 percent, to 2,657.22.

Three stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was very light at 3 billion shares.

Stocks have risen since early October on encouraging signs of progress in containing Europe's debt crisis, stronger U.S. corporate earnings and better news on the U.S. economy. The S&P 500 has soared 13.7 percent since hitting its low for the year on Oct. 3.

That surge has drawn big investors back into the stock market and opened the door to a long line of companies waiting to go public. The flow of money from institutions into U.S. stock funds hit $7.3 billion last week, the third largest tally this year, according to fund tracker EPFR Global.

Angie's List, a customer review website, Delphi Automotive and seven other companies are scheduled to go public this week. If they all wind up going through, it would be the biggest week for IPOs in four years, according to Renaissance Capital, an IPO advisory firm.

In corporate news, the airline Emirates placed an order for 50 Boeing 777s, one of the largest orders ever placed with the aircraft maker. Boeing Co. also picked up a new customer, Oman Air, which ordered six 787s. Boeing rose 1.5 percent.

J.C. Penney Co. fell 2.8 percent after reporting a quarterly loss. The department store operator said its results were weighed down by restructuring costs. The company also lowered its earnings outlook for the rest of the year.

Lowe's Cos. rose 1.7 percent after the country's second-largest home-improvement retailer reported revenue and earnings that beat analysts' expectations.

The Dow has made gains in six of the past seven weeks, and is still up 1 percent for the month. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq are slightly lower.

(AP) ? An accidental explosion at a Revolutionary Guard ammunition depot west of Tehran killed at least 17 soldiers on Saturday, Iranian officials said.

The explosion occurred while military personnel were transporting munitions at a base, said Guard spokesman Gen. Ramazan Sharif. The site is located outside Bidganeh village, 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of the capital.

The Guard is Iran's most powerful military force.

"My colleagues at the Guard were transporting ammunition at one of the depots at the site when an explosion occurred as a result of an accident," Sharif said.

At least 17 Guard members were killed, state TV reported. The broadcast said 16 other soldiers were injured and hospitalized. Sharif said some of them were in critical condition.

Earlier, Sharif had said incorrectly that 27 soldiers were killed but later retracted his statement, explaining that the error was due to an illegible fax from officials at the site of the blast.

Among those killed was Hasan Moghaddam, a senior Guard commander.

Lawmaker Parviz Soroori ruled out sabotage.

"No sabotage was involved in this incident. It has nothing to do with politics," Soroori was quoted as saying by the parliament's website, icana.ir.

Liberia's Sirleaf eyes reconciliation after landslide (Reuters)

MONROVIA (Reuters) ? Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has pledged to involve opponents in her second term after winning a landslide victory in a poll boycotted by her top rival over fraud allegations.

Newly-named Nobel Peace laureate Johnson-Sirleaf won 90.8 percent of votes according to tallies returned from more than 86 of the country's polling stations. More results are due on Friday.

But her victory was tainted by low turnout for Tuesday's poll, which highlighted simmering tensions in the West African country instead of solidifying the fragile gains made since 14 years of civil war ended in 2003.

At least two people were killed as authorities broke up an opposition protest on the eve of the election and supporters of her main challenger, former U.N. diplomat Winston Tubman, have said they do not recognize Johnson-Sirleaf's win.

Her Unity Party's failure to win a majority in parliamentary elections held last month may boost the need for her to seek allies, although she has not specified whether that will run to government posts for Tubman or other opposition leaders.

"I will reach out to all the presidential candidates. What I will offer them is not yet known," she told reporters on Thursday.

In a separate interview with UN Radio, she said the fact she was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize days before the first round of voting in October meant she now had to go "the extra mile" in promoting reconciliation.

"We are going to reach out to everybody and ensure that they have a participation in what we do," she said.

Stability in Liberia is a vital piece in the overall security make-up of West Africa, a region trying to move on from decades of civil wars and coups in countries such as Ivory Coast, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Tubman, who was a senior aide to former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, scored 9.2 percent. His name was left on ballot slips despite his decision to withdraw from the run-off, alleging irregularities in the first round of voting.

MORE WORK NEEDED

Provisional turnout for the run-off was just 37.4 percent, barely half the first-round figure when excited Liberians queued in the rain to cast their ballot.

International election observers say voting has been broadly fair, but the violence and the low turnout has prompted calls on Johnson-Sirleaf to do more to heal divisions.

"The Liberian efforts for inclusion now must accelerate," John Stremlau of the Carter Center observer mission said.

Tubman alleges that authorities made an attempt on his life as they broke up Monday's opposition rally -- an accusation the government strenuously denies -- and said ahead of the results that any form of power-sharing accord was unlikely.

Tubman on Friday declined further comment until the full results were known. But several supporters of his CDC party have said they would not accept the outcome.

"The election is not correct. It is not correct because the turnout is poor. I am a CDC supporter and I did not vote," said Nora Wilson, 45, a used-clothing saleswoman in Monrovia.

Critics say Johnson-Sirleaf, while at least keeping Liberia on an even keel after a war that claimed nearly a quarter million lives, has not done enough to spur development in a country where average income is less than a dollar a day.

She told UN Radio she would count on U.N. agencies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and child welfare body UNICEF to supplement local efforts to tackle poverty.

Liberia is hoping iron ore resources being mined by groups such as ArcelorMittal will find reconstruction. However it received a blow to its hopes of a future oil bonanza this week as tests at its offshore Montserrado well failed to hit oil in commercial quantities.

Oprah Winfrey receives "unimaginable" Oscar (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Oprah Winfrey received an honorary Oscar for her charitable work on Saturday in what she called an unimaginable moment for a black woman who grew up poor in Mississippi and rose to the top of Hollywood stardom.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences annually bestows its Governors Awards on people who have made an impact in the industry. This year, the honorary Oscars went to Winfrey, actor James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Smith at a black-tie affair that brought out stars such as John Travolta, Glenn Close and Alec Baldwin.

Talk show host and film actress Winfrey, who was nominated for a supporting-actress Academy Award in 1985's "The Color Purple," was given a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by a young woman who was sent through high school on a financial grant she earned from Winfrey's foundation.

Winfrey teared up when accepting her honorary Oscar and described the moment as "unimaginable" given her humble roots growing up in Mississippi.

"All of us can make a difference through the life we lead," Winfrey said. "We're all here to help each other."

She talked of her career as a TV chat show host and her movie work, and said it was "The Color Purple" that paved the way to stardom which, ultimately, led to philanthropy.

That movie "door opened to me through the magic and majesty of film," she said.

James Earl Jones was given his honorary Oscar for a body of acting work that ranges from his Academy Award-nominated performance as a boxer in "The Great White Hope" to voicing the role of the villainous Darth Vader in the "Star Wars" movies.

Jones was not on hand because he is in working in London, but he spoke to the Los Angeles audience in a speech that was taped earlier on Saturday.

He said he was "deeply honored, mighty grateful and just plain gobsmacked," using British slang for being astounded.

Finally, the "Godfather of makeup" Dick Simon was given an honorary Oscar for his behind-the-scenes work using makeup and prosthetics to make actors look old, young, sick, dying and dead in films ranging from "The Exorcist" to "The Godfather."

Simon gave a tearful and heartfelt acceptance speech in which he said he has loved every minute of his work in the movie business. "This kind of puts the crowning cap on all that," Simon said.

The Oscars, or Academy Awards, for the films of 2011 will be given out in a ceremony in Los Angeles on February 26.

GOP hopeful Perry appears on Letterman (AP)

NEW YORK ? Republican presidential contender Rick Perry laughed about his debate performance with David Letterman, gamely poking fun at himself Thursday by giving the TV audience "Top 10 Rick Perry Excuses" for being unable to remember the three federal agencies he would eliminate.

One reason for his brain freeze Wednesday on stage with his GOP rivals: "Hey, listen. You try concentrating with Mitt Romney smiling at you. That is one handsome dude," Perry chuckled during his segment with the comedian.

At the debate, Perry could only come up with the names of two of the three agencies he had promised to get rid of if elected president, ending with a grinning, "Oops."

Perry later said he would eliminate the Commerce, Education and Energy departments.

He also acknowledged that he had "stepped in it" during the debate.

The Texas governor is trying to turn the stumble into an opportunity. He is asking supporters to pitch in a few dollars for every agency they would abolish.

Perry's Top 10 excuses on Letterman:

10. "Actually there were three reasons I messed up last night. One was the nerves, two was the headache and three was, and three, uh, uh. Oops."

9. "I don't know what you're talking about. I think things went well."

8. "Hey, I was up late last night watching `Dancing With the Stars.'"

7. "I thought the debate was tonight."

6. "Hey, listen. You try concentrating with Mitt Romney smiling at you. That is one handsome dude."

5. "Uh, el nino?"

4. "I had a five-hour energy drink six hours before the debate."

3. "I really hoped to get on my favorite talk show, but instead I ended up here."

2. "Hey, I wanted to help take the heat off my buddy Herman Cain."

1. "I just learned Justin Bieber is my father."

Joe Paterno Exit Being Planned By Penn State: Report

According to The New York Times, Penn State is preparing for the exit of longtime football coach Joe Paterno in the wake of the sexual abuse scandal involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

The Times' report came less than an hour after Paterno's weekly press conference was cancelled early Tuesday afternoon. Scott Paterno, the coach's son, informed the Associated Press that the press conference had been cancelled at the insistence of University President Graham Spanier's office.

Two high-ranking officials -- Tim Curley and Gary Schultz -- have already stepped down from their positions in the wake of the scandal.

The Who launch teen cancer program at LA hospital

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Two members of the British rock band The Who have launched a program for teens and young adults with cancer.

Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend appeared Friday at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, where they pledged to raise money to renovate part of the hospital pediatric floor into a separate space for patients ages 15 to 25.

Other celebrities, including Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin and Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, lent their star power to the effort. The goal is to create rooms clustered around a common lounge area where young cancer patients can hang out with one another.

Several hospitals across the United States, including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, already have dedicated spaces for teen cancer patients.

Israeli air strike kills Palestinian militant in Gaza (Reuters)

GAZA (Reuters) ? An Israeli air strike killed a Palestinian member of Islamic Jihad and wounded two others in the southern Gaza Strip on Saturday, the militant group said.

An Israeli military spokesman confirmed that an aircraft had fired on militants. He said they were preparing to fire a rocket into Israel.

Medical sources confirmed that one person had been killed and two wounded in the strike east of Khan Younis. Islamic Jihad said all three were its members.

Palestinian militants fired a rocket into southern Israel on Friday, causing no injuries or damage, the Israeli military said.

Islamic Jihad traded deadly fire with Israel last week, in which 12 Palestinian gunmen and one Israeli civilian were killed. The fighting ended only after neighbouring Egypt brokered a ceasefire with both parties.

Astrophile: Attack of the mystery green blobs

Astrophile is our weekly column covering curious cosmic objects, from within the solar system to the furthest reaches of the multiverse

Object type: Glowing gas cloud
Mass: Billions of times the mass of the sun

Imagine making a night-time trek to a remote stretch of desert, far from any sign of civilisation. You crest a hill and are astonished to find a building ablaze with artificial lighting.

That is a little like the puzzlement that greeted the discovery of Hanny's Voorwerp, a curious gas cloud found floating in intergalactic space in 2007. It is brighter than 30,000 suns but has no obvious power source. Now, 19 similar clouds have been discovered, all glowing apparently without internal power.

The clouds were probably energised by nearby monster black holes that had blasted them with intense radiation. This link to huge black holes is exciting because it means the clouds could be an excellent new way to probe the growth and feeding habits of these inscrutable behemoths.

Hanny's Voorwerp was discovered by the schoolteacher Hanny van Arkel while she was classifying galaxies as a volunteer for the Galaxy Zoo citizen science project. She noticed a weird blob that appeared intensely blue in the false-colour image she was examining and emailed the Galaxy Zoo researchers about it. Voorwerp means "thing" in Dutch, Van Arkel's native language.

Monster suspect

Intrigued, the researchers scheduled new telescopic observations of the object. "It became clear quickly just how special it was," says William Keel of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, a member of the observation team, which was led by Chris Lintott of the University of Oxford.

The object's light spectrum shows that its glow comes from oxygen that has been ionised ? stripped of some of its electrons ? along with other ionised elements, making its true hue a greenish colour. It would take a huge amount of energy to ionise all this gas, but there was no hint of a source. Radiation from hot young stars could account for ionised oxygen in the cloud, but not the ionised neon: neon doesn't shine in the ultraviolet, as seen in the cloud, without lots of X-rays hitting it.

That suggested a monster black hole was involved. Most galaxies are thought to host one in their cores and in many cases matter spiralling into the black holes produces huge amounts of X-rays.

A galaxy called IC?2497 lies about 45,000 to 70,000 light years from the glowing cloud, and a black hole at its core could easily blast Hanny's Voorwerp with X-rays. But there's a catch. IC?2497's core shows no sign of emitting X-rays.

Brutal binges

In 2008, the team concluded that less than 100,000 years before IC?2497 became the galaxy we see today , its black hole was gulping down a big meal and sending out a torrent of X-rays. Because it takes time for the X-rays to reach the cloud, some of them were still arriving and making it glow when it emitted the light Van Arkel saw, even though the black hole was by then quiet.

That's a rare bit of evidence of how much black-hole feeding can vary over tens of thousands of years. Researchers are keen to understand the feeding habits of black holes because such binges, called accretion events, have an enormous effect on their surroundings, shutting off galaxy growth by heating and expelling the gas needed to form new stars.

No freak

But it was not clear how representative Hanny's Voorwerp was of black-hole behaviour. Now, professional researchers and Galaxy Zoo volunteers working together have found 19 similar objects ? glowing gas clouds near galaxies whose black holes appear quiet but probably blasted the clouds in the past.

Three-quarters of the newly discovered clouds have a nearby galaxy that is interacting or merging with another galaxy, according to the new study, which Keel is leading. That fits with the black-hole-blast explanation, because such encounters tend to shake loose gas clouds that then stray into intergalactic space ? providing targets to be illuminated by black hole X-rays.

It also shows Hanny's Voorwerp is not a freak. All over the universe, black holes are apparently firing broadsides at their surroundings, then quickly quietening down and fading from view, like flashing lights.

"If you could watch the cosmic movie and speed it up, it would be like a Christmas tree, with these [X-ray blasts] popping off in one galaxy, then the next," says Keel.

China will phase out energy-draining light bulbs

(AP) ? China will phase out power-draining light bulbs within five years in a move to make the world's biggest polluting nation more efficient but also certain to impact the global market.

China will ban imports and sales of 100-watt-and-higher incandescent bulbs from Oct. 1, 2012, in an attempt to save energy and curb climate change, China's main planning agency said Friday.

Bans will also be imposed on 60-watt-and-higher bulbs from Oct. 1, 2014 and 15-watt-and-higher old-style bulbs from Oct. 1, 2016. The time frame of the last step may be adjusted according to an evaluation in September 2016, the National Development and Reform Commission statement said.

State-run Xinhua News Agency quoted Xie Ji, deputy director of the NDRC's environmental protection department, as saying China is the world's largest producer of both energy-saving and incandescent bulbs and so the plan will also "have a significant impact" in reducing the use of incandescents worldwide.

Last year, 3.85 billion incandescent light bulbs were produced in China and 1.07 billion of them were sold domestically, the agency said. Power consumption for lighting is estimated to be about 12 percent of China's total electricity use, it said.

The statement said China will save 48 billion kilowatt hours of power per year and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 48 million tonnes annually once the bulbs are phased out.

Several countries plan to phase out traditional light bulbs. The United States will ban the making and sale of incandescent light bulbs beginning in 2012. The 27-nation European Union agreed in 2008 to phase out the bulbs by 2012.

Greece gambles on referendum for new debt deal

Taking a huge political gamble, Greece's prime minister announced Monday that his debt-strapped country will hold a referendum on the new European debt deal reached last week ? the first such vote in 37 years.

Prime Minister George Papandreou appeared to take many lawmakers by surprise by saying that a hard-bargained agreement that took months for Europe's leaders to hammer out will be put to a public ballot.

He gave no date or other details on the proposed referendum, which would be the first in Greece since 1974, when the monarchy was abolished by a landslide vote months after the collapse of a military dictatorship.

"This will be the referendum: The citizen will be called upon to say a big 'yes' or a big 'no' to the new loan arrangement," Papandreou told Socialist members of parliament. "This is a supreme act of democracy and of patriotism for the people to make their own decision ... We have a duty to promote the role and the responsibility of the citizen."

The move allows Socialist lawmakers ? who have been vilified by an increasingly hostile public during months of strikes, sit-ins and violent protests over rounds of austerity measures ? to pass the responsibility for the country's fate to the Greek people themselves.

Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos, a constitutional law professor, said the referendum was called after opposition parties repeatedly failed to side with the government in negotiations between Greece and other eurozone members.

"Greece is living through a drama, from which it must be released by asking the people to express its will," Venizelos told parliament.

"Each citizen will make his own decision, with responsibility, in a process that will provide a national sense of relief and recovery."

Later he told private Antenna television: "It is very clear: The new agreement will be submitted to parliament for approval and then submitted to the judgment of the Greek people ... the Greek people can of course say 'no' but must bear in mind the consequences of that decision."

Venizelos indicated the referendum would be held early next year, after weeks of complex negotiations to finalize details of the new agreement.

The new debt deal aims to seek 50 percent losses for private holders of Greek bonds and provide the troubled eurozone member with ?100 billion ($140 billion) in additional rescue loans.

Papandreou's government has seen its majority reduced to just three seats in parliament and its approval ratings plummet amid harsh austerity measures that are sending the country into a fourth year of recession in 2012.

The EU statistics agency Eurostat estimated in a report issued Monday that unemployment in Greece reached 17.6 percent in July ? even higher than the Greek estimate for that month of 16.5 percent.

"This is just the latest twist in the unfolding Greek tragedy," said Sony Kapoor, managing director of Re-Define, a London-based think tank.

"With an irresponsible opposition that is promising Greek voters the moon, it is very difficult to see how this referendum could be won under the ongoing gut-wrenching austerity."

Eurozone countries struggled for months to overcome their differences before reaching the Oct. 26 agreement ? the second broad agreement reached in four months ? and it is likely to cause major concern for EU officials.

Germany's Finance Ministry noted late Monday that "the summit of the eurozone's heads of states and governments last Wednesday formulated clear expectations. Accordingly, the second aid package for Greece shall be finalized by year's end."

"At the moment we are all working on this with high intensity," it said in a statement.

But it declined to comment directly on the ballot, saying "the announcement of a referendum is a development in Greece's domestic politics on which the (German) government has no information yet."

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the referendum was "a matter for the Greeks."

"Every country needs to have their own domestic political approach to the problems ... The consequences of a 'yes' or 'no' vote are something that will have to be debated in Greece," Hague told Channel 4 News.

"We look to all the countries in the eurozone to honor the agreements they have entered into."

In Greece, opposition parties accused the government of calling the vote to save its teetering government, threatened by growing dissent from Socialist dissenters.

"The prime minister is trying to buy time," said Costas Gioulekas of the conservative New Democracy party said. "We want clear solutions. And a clear solution is obvious: Elections."

Under Greece's constitution, a referendum requires approval by parliament before it is officially declared by the country's president. Gioulekas would not say whether his party would back a "yes" vote.

Support for the Socialists has eroded so much that anti-government protesters forced authorities Friday to cancel an annual military parade to honor World War II veterans, causing deep embarrassment to the government.

Iran's parliament votes to keep Ahmadinejad's minister (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran's parliament voted on Tuesday against removing the economy minister of hardline President Mahoud Ahmadinejad from office over the country's biggest financial scandal.

Parliamentarians who wanted to remove Shamseddin Hosseini lambasted him for mismanagement, including laxity in monitoring the banking sector.

"141 of the 244 parliamentarians present voted against unseating the minister," said parliament speaker Ali Larijani, a political rival to Ahmadinejad. A simple majority in the 290-seat assembly is enough to remove a minister from office.

The $2.6 billion banking scandal has taken on political dimensions because some hardliners linked the main suspect in the fraud to a so-called "deviant current" of advisers, allegedly led by Ahmadinejad's chief of staff and closest ally.

Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie is accused by many Shi'ite clerics and politicians of trying to undermine the central role of the clergy in politics by emphasizing the nationalist strain of Iranian history and culture.

The conservative-dominated parliament has given Ahmadinejad a hard time since his re-election in 2009 by rejecting many of his nominees for key ministries and also by obstructing the government's proposed bills, including a cash subsidy plan on fuel and energy. The bill was passed and implemented in 2010.

Larijani called on lawmakers to give Hosseini another chance after he repeatedly apologized for his shortcomings during a speech defending his actions.

"I urge you to give the minister a conditional vote of confidence ... Unseating Hosseini could intensify tension between the parliament and the government," Larijani told MPs.

The power struggle between the president and ruling hierarchy followed the 2009 election that the opposition says was rigged to secure Ahmadinejad's victory. Officials deny this.

MONEY FOR CAMPAIGN

Ahmadinejad's allies said the impeachment proceeding was politically motivated to weaken the president who has called his government "the cleanest" in the country's history.

"We are against corruption ... The MPs' sensitivity over this incident is appreciated ... but shortcomings can happen anywhere in the system. We should unite to overcome them," Ahmadinejad told parliament when defending his minister.

Politicians, including lawmakers, accuse the "deviant current" of planning to use some of the stolen money to fund the 2012 parliamentary election campaign.

Critics believe Ahmadinejad was grooming Mashaie to succeed him in the 2013 presidential vote.

A pro-reform former official said Ahmadinejad's hardline rivals, including politicians and the clerical elites, "want to clip his wings to make him a lame duck president in the remaining part of his term."

In a speech last month, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei touched on the possibility of eliminating the position of president. Since April, Ahmadinejad's allies have been dismissed, detained and banned from holding office on various grounds.

At least 74 MPs last week demanded Ahmadinejad be summoned to face questions over his economic policies. Attempts by the parliament to impeach Ahmadinejad have been blocked by Khamenei's interventions.

Hunter hurt in bear attack in the Grand Tetons

A Wyoming hunter was injured on Sunday in an attack by a bear in Grand Teton National Park, officials said.

National Park Service officials said the 32-year-old Jackson man was hunting elk along the Snake River when he spotted the bear and dropped to the ground, covering his head.

The man, whose name has not been released, did not shoot at the bear and had not yet killed an elk. He was carrying bear repellant spray and followed recommended protocols for hunting in bear country, officials said.

Authorities are investigating the incident, but had not yet determined the bear's species. They have not released details of the hunter's injuries. He was transported to St. John's Medical Center in Jackson for treatment.

Though hunting is typically prohibited in national parks, a limited special hunt to reduce elk numbers is underway in Grand Teton.

Story: After attacks, a renewed focus on bear safety

Although attacks by bears are uncommon, and fatalities exceptionally rare, two hikers were killed this summer by grizzly bears in separate incidents in Yellowstone National Park.

There have been six reported bear attacks in the history of Grand Teton, and none were fatal, according to park officials.

Former Sooners announcer Bob Barry Sr. dies (AP)

OKLAHOMA CITY ? Bob Barry Sr., the longtime play-by-play voice of Oklahoma football and men's basketball games who also was a local sports anchor, died Sunday. He was 80.

KFOR-TV news director Mary Ann Eckstein said Barry was found dead in his Norman home.

"He didn't get his morning papers and his neighbors became concerned," Eckstein said. She had no other details and said a cause of death had not been determined.

Barry became the radio play-by-play voice of the University of Oklahoma in 1961, when he was chosen by football coach Bud Wilkinson. Barry held the job until the team's radio rights changed in 1972.

He returned as the voice of the Sooners in 1991 after providing basketball and football play-by-play for Oklahoma State University and basketball play-by-play for the University of Tulsa in between his OU stints.

Barry retired last spring at the end of the OU basketball season, having spent 50 years calling Division I college games in the state. He said he did so for health reasons and because he didn't feel his vision allowed him to perform up to his standards.

"Something you love to do your entire life and you're able to do it and get paid for it, it's hard to let go. Really, part of me doesn't want to let go. But the other part of me says, `It's time, Bubba,'" Barry said in August 2010, when announcing his retirement plans.

Barry was sports director at Oklahoma City's KFOR until 1998, when he was succeeded by his son, Bob Barry Jr. Barry Sr. continued providing reports for the television station until retiring in 2008.

OU President David Boren said Barry was "loved by Oklahomans" across the state.

"Bob Barry represented the best of the Sooner spirit. With his contagious enthusiasm, he was one of the best sports broadcast journalists in the entire nation," Boren said in a statement released by the university.

When announcing his retirement, Barry listed the 1971 "Game of the Century" between No. 2 Oklahoma and top-ranked Nebraska and the Sooners' most recent national championship win in the 2001 Orange Bowl among the highlights of his career.

His very first game was Oklahoma's trip to Notre Dame in the 1961 season opener.

"I was scared to death," Barry said last year. "I get in there and do the game, broadcast the game and then like a little kid, I get on the phone, `Dad, how'd I do? How'd I do, Dad?' ... He said I did OK."

OU football coach Bob Stoops, in a statement released by the university, expressed condolences to Barry's family.

"I know this is a difficult time for them, but hope they can find comfort in a life well-lived and the love of countless fans all over the country."

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, who was the Cowboys' quarterback when Barry was the Cowboys' play-by-play announcer during the 1980s, issued a statement calling Barry a family friend and a state legend.

"He always had a smile and a great sense of humor. From the Gundy family and the entire Oklahoma State family, we send our thoughts and prayers."

Toby Rowland, the man who replaced Barry as the voice of the Sooners, said he never saw Barry have a bad day.

"Even after 50 years of broadcasting he would show up at the stadium like a kid in a candy store. His play by play style was unmistakable, but it is his gentle, kind and fun-loving spirit that I will always remember," Rowland said.

Barry's career began with him calling football and basketball games at Norman High School before he was noticed by Wilkinson, whose sons attended the school. He then spent the final two decades of his career back on the sidelines calling Sooners games.

"I don't know what I did right to deserve this," Barry said upon announcing his retirement, "but it's just been wonderful."

Droughts Linked To Global Warming

Seriously, cap-n-trade works IFF all nations participate. Well, Not only is USA not participating, but the worst polluter, china, will not either. In fact, if USA does, then it is CERTAIN that China and 3rd world nations will actually make a grab for American businesses by quickly building up electricity (probably following the chinese model of illegally subsidizing it and then dumping the goods on international market). And what is the fastest way to build up CHEAP electricity? Coal plants without ANY pollution control (in fact, china has nearly all, if not all, of their pollution controls turned off).

So, what is the best solution? Have nations tax ALL goods (local and imported) based on the CO2 that comes from the nation where the final assembly and the primary sub-components (depending on size of item, much even want several of the largest sub-components). Ideally, we would tax based on CO2 emissions from a nation on a per sq km basis. With that approach, it forces ALL major nations to lower their emissions, while nearly all 3rd world nations are all ready at low levels. However, with this approach, it will reward those nations that actually take the initiative to drop their emissions, while punishing those that choose to ignore it. That includes the nation that invokes the tax itself.

America is to launch OCO2 in 2012. It measures CO2 emissions. Rather than playing guessing games, this would simply measure CO2 into a nation's border, as well as CO2 OUT of the nation. That approach would allow us to find exactly how much CO2 a nation generates and not worry about the source. That is up to the nation to solve. They may wish to kill coal plants. Or they may elect to kill cars. etc. However, this approach combined with per sq km basis, allows a nation to decide if the issue is a business issue or a ppl issue and then adjust accordingly. However cap-n-trade and combined with per capita is about the worst idea going. It is already failing in EU. They are losing businesses to China who will continue to cheat all the way through this.

Question: Can I create the Fire Lord's (I'm assuming it's still Zuko) daughter?

User avatar

@TwiliXDragon: Actually, this takes place way before Zuko is even born, this is right before the great war comes around, with Sozin being the Fire Lord at the time. However, you may create Sozin's daughter, since his offspring were never really named or confirmed.

Can I create a Fire Nation rebel? It's implied that Sozin went away with many Fire Nation traditions and subjugated the Fire Sages. Not everyone could have liked that. Even Nazi Germany had the White Rose.
