NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? As it turns out, Scotty McCreery can have it all.

The platinum-selling teen and former "American Idol" champ began his freshman year at North Carolina State University recently and he's managed to work out a schedule that allows him to balance his college education with his country music education.

"I made a 98 on my first math test," McCreery said. "I was pumped about that because math is not one of my best things."

It's not the first test McCreery has passed on his quick rise to fame, first winning Season 10 of "Idol," then becoming the youngest male to enter the Billboard 200 at No. 1. While the siren call of celebrity has had a strong pull, McCreery has said all along he also wants to maintain the normal life he'd been planning before he was swept away by "Idol."

That's why he chose N.C. State over a school closer to Nashville. He lives in an off-campus apartment in Raleigh with lifelong friends, just 15 or 20 minutes from his home in Garner and only an hour from Music City by plane. He goes to class on Mondays and Wednesdays, where he's mostly been left alone to study by courteous fellow students. Then he either joins the Brad Paisley tour on the road or works with producer Mark Bright on writing and assembling songs for his next album.

He's even managed to slip in intramural football on Tuesdays. Well, most Tuesdays.

"Going to State, it gives me a chance to have a little bit of a home base, to have a little bit of normalcy ? whatever normal is," McCreery said. "I think it's good for me as a person. I'm still figuring out what my normal is."

What isn't normal is the interest in McCreery by fans. His popularity is off the charts in the country music world where the average male star is usually in his 30s. McCreery doesn't turn 19 till later this month and there are signs everywhere that his popularity continues to grow. Billboard and Variety both just named him one of music's top young stars. And even his Christmas album, "Christmas with Scotty McCreery," due out next week, shows signs of unusually strong fan interest. It's Universal Music Group's top pre-order this year, outselling even Lady Gaga and Kanye West.

The goal now, McCreery says, is to lock in those fans, which requires him to seek a well-rounded education. Monday through Wednesday he's working on 12 credit hours toward his communications degree. Thursday through Sunday, it's all about learning the secrets of longevity in the country world.

About the only accolade McCreery doesn't have is a top 10 song at country radio, something he knows he'll need if he wants to be doing this at 40.

"We're still looking for songs because that's what the second album is about for me," McCreery said. "I'm going to be picking and choosing. Country music is about the songs. This last year I've had sold-out shows, I've won awards and stuff, but I haven't had that huge monster hit yet. That's a song I really need to have."

Comunidades Unidas ? Communities United ? will hold its 3rd Annual Pink Dress Breast Cancer Awareness Fashion Show on Oct. 26 at the Salt Lake Hardware Building.

The event will include a survivor runway show and a contest to create the best pink dress in honor of breast cancer awareness. Dinner will be provided by RICO Catering. There also will be drinks, dancing and prizes.

The fashion show and festivities will run from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance, or $30 at the door.

A VIP package will be available for $35 in advance, $40 at the door. It includes a drink ticket and three raffle tickets, priority entry and reserved seating.

Rights group: Egypt draft charter curbs freedoms

CAIRO (AP) ? Human Rights Watch on Monday urged the panel writing Egypt's new constitution to amend articles in the draft that the New York-based group says repress the rights of women and children and limit freedom of religion and expression.

In a letter delivered to the panel, HRW said the draft upholds some political and civil rights, such as banning trials of civilians before military courts ? a practice that was rampant both under Egypt's ousted leader Hosni Mubarak and also during the recent transitional period under military rule.

But other articles fall short of international laws and restrict freedoms of women and minorities, according to HRW, which reviewed the draft on the panel's website and in public hearings.

A 100-member panel is expected to finish writing the draft charter as early as next month. The new constitution then will have to be put to a public referendum within 30 days.

Heba Morayef, a researcher with HRW, said there were at least eight problematic articles currently under debate. Political rivalries between radical Salafi Islamists and the less radical but fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood members who dominate the panel are holding negotiations over amending the constitution "prey," Morayef said.

"As it stands, this draft clearly contradicts Egypt's international obligations," Morayef said.

The HRW appeal followed an outcry from progressive groups who fear Islamists are dominating the process of writing the new constitution. Some liberals have called for international pressure to ensure Egypt complies with international standards of human rights, prompting accusations from Islamists that they are inviting foreign meddling.

Nadim Houry, deputy director of the Middle East and North Africa division at Human Rights Watch, said the panel writing the constitution has a "landmark opportunity to lay the groundwork for respecting human rights in tomorrow's Egypt."

"But its current draft fails to meet that standard because of vague language or limitations that destroy the essence of many rights," said Houry.

Calls seeking comment on the HRW appeal from Islamists members of the panel were not immediately returned.

Houry said it was "particularly shocking" that the charter, which comes after decades of abuse under Mubarak, does not mention torture, and only refers to "physical or psychological harm."

Egypt's former constitution and legislation failed to criminalize and specifically define torture, which is one of the reasons why it remains rampant and why abuses continue to be committed with impunity, the group added. Torture and abuse by security agencies under Mubarak was one of the main sparks that led to the uprising that toppled him last year.

HRW said it was also concerned by the push by Salafis to exclude articles that prohibit trafficking in women and children, allegedly because it doesn't exist in Egypt. Houry said that omitting such an article is "particularly reprehensible" because it is a serious crime under already existing Egyptian law.

Other articles, HRW said, restrict freedom of religion and worship and discriminate against minority groups such as Shiites and Bahais.

Another article seeks to install Al-Azhar, Egypt's premier Sunni Islamic institution, as the sole body authorized to interpret religious laws, effectively giving it a vetting legislative role over all laws to determine if they are in line with its interpretation of Islam.

"Nobody is thinking about human rights," Morayef said. "I think the Salafis are trying to pull the Muslim Brotherhood toward the most conservative directions."

The Brotherhood and the Salafis hold at least 52 seats on the constitutional panel, which was formed by parliament before a court dissolved the legislature. Their majority is further strengthened by Islamists unaligned with parties. The assembly includes eight women, several of them Brotherhood members, and eight Christians.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Philippine President Benigno Aquino III announced Sunday that his government has reached a preliminary peace deal with the nation's largest Muslim rebel group in a major breakthrough toward ending a decades-long insurgency.

Aquino said the "framework agreement" ? a roadmap for a new autonomous region for minority Muslims in the predominantly Roman Catholic nation's south ? was an assurance the Moro Islamic Liberation Front insurgents will no longer aim to secede from the country.

The agreement, to be signed Oct. 15 in Manila, spells out general principles on major issues, including the extent of power, revenues and territory of the Muslim region. If all goes well, a final peace deal could be reached by 2016, when Aquino's six-year term ends, officials said.

"This framework agreement paves the way for final and enduring peace in Mindanao," Aquino said, referring to the southern Philippine region and homeland of the country's Muslims. "This means that the hands that once held rifles will be put to use tilling land, selling produce, manning work stations and opening doorways of opportunity."

He cautioned, however, that "the work does not end here," and that the two sides still need to work out the accord's details. Those talks are expected to be tough but doable, officials and rebels said.

Rebel vice chairman Ghadzali Jaafar said the agreement provides a huge relief to people who have long suffered from war and are "now hoping the day would come when there will be no need to bear arms."

The deal marks the most significant progress in 15 years of on-and-off negotiations with the 11,000-strong Moro group on ending an uprising that has left more than 120,000 people dead, displaced about 2 million others and held back development in the south. Western governments have long worried that rebel strongholds could become breeding grounds for al-Qaida-affiliated extremists.

"The parties agree that the status quo is unacceptable," the 13-page agreement says. It calls for the creation of a new Muslim autonomous region called "Bangsamoro" to replace an existing one created in 1989 which Aquino characterized as a "failed experiment," where poverty and corruption have forced many "to articulate their grievances through the barrel of a gun."

The accord also calls for the establishment of a 15-member "Transition Commission" to work out the details of the preliminary agreement and draft a law creating the new Muslim autonomous region in about two years.

Rebel forces would be deactivated gradually "beyond use," the agreement says, without specifying a timetable.

The Philippine government would continue to exercise exclusive powers over defense and security, foreign and monetary policy in the new autonomous region, where Muslims would be assured of an "equitable share of taxation, revenues, and the fruits of national patrimony ... and equal protection of laws and access to impartial justice," according to Aquino.

Philippine officials said the preliminary accord would be posted on the government's website for public scrutiny, and would be signed in Manila in the presence of Aquino, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and Moro rebel chief Al Haj Murad Ibrahim.

"It's been a long journey and this is an important milestone in our search for lasting peace," presidential peace talks adviser Teresita Deles told AP.

The United States, Britain, Malaysia and other countries welcomed the accord.

"This agreement is a testament to the commitment of all sides for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the southern Philippines," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement. "The next steps will be to ensure that the framework agreement is fully implemented."

The new Muslim region would be built upon an existing five-province autonomous territory, among the country's poorest and most violent, with more than 4 million people.

The Moro rebels earlier dropped a demand for a separate Muslim state and renounced terrorism.

Their negotiator, Mohagher Iqbal, earlier said his group would not lay down its weapons until a final peace accord is concluded. He said the insurgents could form a political party and run in democratic elections to get a chance at leading the autonomous region for which they have been fighting.

In Kuala Lumpur, Philippine government negotiator Marvic Leonen said both sides face the enormous task of working out the details. "We are not naive to say that there would be no obstacles. But the Philippine government will defend the agreement," Leonen said.

The challenges are many.

In 2008, the planned signing of a similar preliminary pact was scuttled when opponents went to the Supreme Court, which declared the agreement unconstitutional. Fighting erupted when three rebel commanders attacked Christian communities, and an ensuing military offensive killed more than 100 people and displaced about 750,000 villagers before a cease-fire ended the violence.

One of the hardline rebel commanders, Ameril Umbra Kato, broke off from the Moro rebels last year and formed a new group opposed to the talks. Kato's forces launched attacks on several army camps and outposts in August, prompting another army offensive that killed more than 50 fighters in the 200-strong rebel faction.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front itself broke away in the 1980s from the Moro National Liberation Front, which signed a 1996 autonomy deal with the government. That peace accord did not lead to disarming of the group and many of the rebels have simply laid low in the south, still demanding that the government fulfill its commitments, including jobs, security and economic development.

Some former guerrillas also formed a small but brutal al-Qaida-linked group called the Abu Sayyaf, which became notorious for bombings, ransom kidnappings and beheadings until U.S.-backed Philippine military offensives routed many of its militants. They are mostly based in the southern provinces of Sulu and Basilan, where about 400 gunmen remain.

Calls for carbon emissions target

Ministers must set a specific target for restricting carbon emissions from power generation, businesses have said.

The plea is made in an open letter to Chancellor George Osborne signed by 50 businesses and organisations.

They want a target for how emissions should be curbed by 2030, arguing that a failure to show commitment to reducing carbon emissions may harm the economy and their commercial prospects.

Mr Osborne has outlined plans to get energy from gas beyond 2030.

Labour Leader Ed Miliband has backed a 2030 target for the power sector and the Liberal Democrats have supported a target under the Energy Bill, to be included in secondary legislation to allow flexibility.

The government's climate advisers have warned support for future gas plants without technology fitted to cut emissions is not compatible with climate change legislation and is harming investment in low-carbon power such as renewables and nuclear.

Companies and investors have joined with trade unions, environmental groups and industry bodies to warn the chancellor that support for gas power into the 2030s is undermining investment in UK electricity infrastructure.

The introduction of a carbon intensity target for the energy sector would, they say, provide investors with the long term confidence needed to transform the electricity market and promote wider economic growth.

The letter was signed by 50 businesses and organisations, including Microsoft, Marks and Spencer, Alliance Boots and Asda.

In it, they warn the Mr Osborne that uncertainty over the government's commitment to low-carbon power generation is harming the development of green businesses.

The letter states: "The government's perceived commitment to the low carbon transition is being undermined by recent statements calling for unabated gas in the power sector beyond 2030 and the absence of a specific carbon intensity target."

It highlights a recent report by business group the CBI, which estimates that while a third of UK growth in 2011/2012 came from green businesses, policy uncertainty could lose the UK ?400m in exports in 2014/2015 alone.

"It is essential for government to provide investors with the long-term confidence they need to transform our electricity market and make investments capable of driving wider economic growth," says the letter.

Peter Young, chairman of the Aldersgate Group which co-ordinated the move, called for an end to "any political uncertainty surrounding the UK's energy future".

And Andy Atkins, executive director at Friends of the Earth, which backed the letter, said Mr Osborne's support for gas power was looking "increasingly isolated".

Asda, Aviva, British American Tobacco, EDF, Microsoft, Marks & Spencer, PepsiCo, Philips, Sky and the Co-operative are among the businesses to have signed the letter.

Homely One: Home Office Inspiration

When Sophie was born and our spare room was transformed into her nursery, we lost our 'dumping spot' - somewhere to pop things to be 'dealt with' and where I could hide things. ?I remember when I was planning Sophie's nursery, I thought a lot about how we could somehow fit a spare bed into one of our rooms but there just didn't seem to be the space and so instead, we made do with a folder bed borrowed from my Mum for a few months. ?Paul spent many a night on that folder bed in order to get a decent sleep in the early days when Sophie was a newborn and I was feeding three hourly through the night. ?That folder bed served its purpose but has since been returned and we've now decided we need a spare bed. ?Not so much for sleeping on, more so that I can have that 'spot' again where I can dump things out of sight.

So, we've thought long and hard about the only remaining room that could possibly accommodate such a piece... our study. ?We've decided that slowly over time, we'll transform this room into a combined home office and guest room. ?Much of this room is currently wasted. ?A chair in the corner of the room has never been sat in. ?Our filing cabinet is too big for what we need. ?Our cupboard holds endless books and other items we no longer want or need. ?The built in robe in this room with its single hanging rail and overhead shelf is 'dead space'. ?We've decided we need to make better use of what we have available.

For years, I've kept inspiration folders, including ones for home offices and guest rooms, often wondering why I did so when our study was already furnished and a guest room was something we would probably not see in our household for some time to come. But now? ?Now I can plan. ?I can allow myself to imagine a new space with new furniture and a new colour scheme. ?I can picture new handy with neatly organised craft supplies (I'm taking inspiration from Jane for this one). ?I can dream of the inspiration board I will create with pretty pictures and quotes.

Here are a few images that are inspiring me so far...

To start with, we're decluttering this room. ?We're selling furniture. ?We're donating old books to charity. ?We're freeing up space. ?It's going to take time though... there's a lot of 'stuff' in this room.

1. When traveling, pick a hotel that has a gym?to maintain your exercise regimen.

2. Consider a healthy meal-delivery program.
This takes all the thinking and guesswork out of weight loss and management.

3. Sleep.
Can?t stress this enough: find a way to get more sleep! Not only will it help you slim down, but sleep with enhance your overall health exponentially. Seven to eight hours a night is ideal, you?ll not only feel better but you?ll perform better at work as well.

4. Create time in your busy schedule to maintain a healthy body and a sharp mind.
Try blocking out a minimum of four-30 to 60 minute exercise sessions a week. For instance, one session on the weekend, one during your lunch break, one in the morning before work, and one in the early evening after work.

5. Multitask.
No, it?s not ideal, but taking a call while on the StairMaster or answering emails while pedaling on the bike can be a necessary evil for busy people.

6. Find motivation.
Your desire for physical strength, fitness and health should be just as ambitious as your career goals. Try writing your fitness goals down and posting them in your home and office, so if you ever feel like skipping a workout you can remind yourself why you started in the first place.

7. Find creative ways to get more activity while you?re working.
Standing burns twice as many calories as sitting, so try wearing a headset and pacing if you?re on a conference call. Granted, this is no substitute for a regular exercise regimen, but it?s better than nothing.

8. Pick healthy restaurants for you business lunch and dinners.

Meals out can be a tremendous threat to your weight-loss or weight-management regimen. A restaurant with healthy,?low-calorie options can make a big difference. Also, schedule business dinners earlier in the day to avoid high-calorie meals right before bedtime. Intending to have a drink? Go for one without high-calorie mixers like vodka with soda water, a glass of wine, or a martini.

9. Never compromise on your regular check-ups.

Never get too busy with work to go to the doctor. Your health is a top priority, end of story.

10. Recognize that knowledge is power.

Educate yourself on calorie counting and label reading so you can make informed choices. Also, download one of the many calorie counting apps available that you can install on your phone and use it.

I don't know how long I've been here... I remember being tied at first... Then cuffed... And then put in a dark, dark room.

I opened my eyes, but only saw black.

Sleep never came easy. I tried hard, but I knew I was staying up longer than I was supposed to. I always remember the bright light that came from no where and blinded me every day. When it disappeared, I found food in it's place. I lived as best as I could in here. One day, I wondered who was there.

I yelled, but no one answered.

I was alone. I tried to pass the time by making imaginary friends, but they always left me and ran to a place with light and fun. I don't blame them. One day, I remember the jolt of the chains tightening as I hit the wall. I couldn't move. My arms and legs spread out, the blinding light appeared and I saw shadowy figures. Pain followed that I can't even explain to this days. I felt the stab of needles, one after the other.

I cried, but there was no one's comfort.

When they would leave, the chains would go slack. This seemed to become a daily thing also. I once tried to rebel, but there were screams and yells that I couldn't understand, Pain worse than before, and a choking feeling around my neck. I couldn't do anything, but... I felt a warm splash on my face. It felt... odd. It wasn't the usual liquid I drank. It was warm and after awhile, it got sticky. I found that after I was let back down, it was all over my cell. How peculiar.... Interestingly enough, the next day, it vanished after I was let down again.

I want out of here.

I've recently been hearing things. Not the usual things though. They are sounds from above. Is there even an Above? If so, what is it like? What's in this area above me? Will they cause me pain? But... the question that took over my mind once I started thinking about them was,

October is Family History Month

Happy Monday, it is amazing that the year is nearly over. October is Family History Month, and with the Holidays around the corner there will be plenty of time to share memories, both past and present with family. This year I met a distant relative through my Grandfather Tryon?s side. We have been exchanging information about Andrew E. Tryon, when some of the information sounded very familiar. It was familiar, but not because it was the same person, but because a relative on my Grandma?s side was in the same location as Andrew?s father Jeremiah Tryon was during the Civil War.

Great,Great Grandfather Jeremiah Tryon? died in Shelby Co. TN during the Civil War, d. Oct 20, 1863. 10 months prior to ?Great Great Grandfather( Augustus Williams) on Dec 19, 1862. Both these gentlemen were the Great Great Grandfathers of Elmer(June) Tryon and Ola Mae Durbin(Tryon). ?If my cousin and I hadn?t started sharing information we would have never connected that our families had possibly known each other during the Civil War. I am looking forward to visiting with more family and discovering more about our family.

California's Prop 38 income tax measure headed for defeat, poll shows

Pollsters and political experts are starting to all but write off Proposition 38, the income tax hike measure on the November ballot, putting the focus on whether the campaign's wealthy backer will now set her sights on defeating Gov. Jerry Brown's competing measure.

A USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll released Friday shows that just 34 percent of registered voters plan to vote for Proposition 38, while 52 percent oppose it. Analysts said they can't remember a state measure coming back from that large a deficit with only several weeks to go before an election -- particularly one asking most Californians to raise their own taxes.

"You never say never, especially in such a volatile political environment," said poll director Dan Schnur, director of USC's Unruh Institute of Politics. "But there's no historical precedent for an initiative making up this much ground in weeks before an election."

With the future of California schools at stake and tens of millions of dollars in campaign cash in play, the poll results are sure to ramp up a rivalry between those touting the two high-profile tax measures on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Funded by civil rights attorney Molly Munger, Proposition 38 would increase income taxes by 0.4 to 2.2 percent, depending on how much you make, to fund K-12 and early-childhood education.

It must receive more votes than Brown's competing Proposition 30. That measure would increase the sales tax by a quarter of a

cent and raise income taxes on people making at least $250,000 a year to fund schools and help balance the general-fund budget.

The new poll shows 54 percent of respondents endorsing Proposition 30, with 37 percent opposed.

With Proposition 38 struggling, observers are waiting to see if Munger, who has already contributed nearly $30 million toward her campaign, will shift strategies.

Will she continue to funnel millions of dollars into her campaign, or will she instead start spending huge money on attack ads to defeat Brown's measure? Or will she simply throw in the towel and back Proposition 30 over her measure?

"The fear is that (she) will bring down Prop. 30 without doing anything to (help) Prop. 38," said state Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, a Proposition 30 supporter. "That is a slow-motion train wreck that does not need to happen."

Munger and Brown feuded this summer over who's tax measure was better. Brown tried to get Munger to drop her initiative, saying it would decrease the likelihood that either one would pass. But Munger didn't budge.

Proposition 38's first television ad this week took a shot at the governor and his measure by blaming "Sacramento politicians" for the state's education crisis and implying that Proposition 30 was not the way to solve it. But Munger has yet to fund a direct attack against Brown's initiative.

Nathan Ballard, campaign spokesman for Proposition 38, said the campaign will spend its remaining money on pushing the measure, not bringing down Proposition 30.

"This campaign has only just begun and it would be absurd to count us out," said Ballard, noting the first statewide ad hadn't even started running when the USC/Los Angeles Times poll was in the field. "Our research says that we can win."

Still, when pollsters gave voters arguments in favor of Proposition 38, the results barely changed. And unions have contributed enough money to bankroll a formidable TV campaign backing Proposition 30. The campaign now has $22 million at its disposal.

Munger could be the biggest wild card available to sink Proposition 30, as the anti-tax groups trying to defeat the measure have only raised about $1.2 million. Proposition 30 campaign officials say the only way Munger could defeat Brown's initiative is to run direct attack ads against it.

"But I have faith that's not going to happen," said Ace Smith, Proposition 30's campaign manager.

The poll also showed that 51 percent of voters are likely to support Proposition 39, which would cut off about $1 billion worth of tax loopholes for out-of-state businesses. Only 29 percent are opposed.

The poll of 1,504 registered voters was conducted from Sept. 17 through Sept. 23. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
