You have to be very very very very very careful about this! I have tried to do it myself and only find things a scam, and I re-searched endlessly for about a week and gave up. They all will ask you for money, and I find this odd, being you get a job to make money.

The Hario Cold Water Dripper captivates coffee geeks one hypnotically slow cold drip at a time. You could fly to Rome and nurse a cappuccino in the time it takes to fill its carafe. Yet baristas at the new London coffee shops Prufrock and St. Ali, accustomed though they are to an espresso pace, are happy to wait hours for a batch of iced coffee that won't make their customers wince. Bad things happen when hot coffee goes cold. Ice melts in hot coffee and dilutes it, upsetting its balance. Gradual chilling elicits staleness. With cold brewing baristas can bypass the hazardous journey across a coffee's temperature range.

Back when baristas were just the dudes who made your coffee they found a novel way to neutralise the bitter taste of iced coffee. It was called sugar. (Some stirred the sugar with hot water to create a sugar syrup that dissolved more easily in cold liquid). Coffee merchants from vastly different cultures also observed the milkshake effect: the more their cold coffees took after creamy milkshakes (ice cream, cold milk, syrup) the more people liked them. Starbucks, with its now world-famous Frappuccino, achieved a true breakthrough: an ice-cream-free coffee milkshake that didn't taste too much like a milkshake. Or coffee.

I want my iced coffee to have a real coffee kick. With Vietnamese, Thai and New Orleans ice coffees the added pungency of chicory, historically a coffee substitute, helps the already strong coffee brews cut through the milk and sugar. All three have the added benefit of sliding down like melted coffee ice cream, never a bad thing.

Vietnamese c? ph? (pronounced ka-FEY) drips down from a tiny, filter-bottomed pot over sweetened condensed milk. It is stirred, initiating a groovy marbling effect, and poured over ice. To make Thai iced coffee, oliang, a blend of dark-roasted coffee, chicory and grains (soybean, ground corn, sesame) is combined in a muslin sack and steeped in hot water. The filtered brew is poured over ice and topped with a layer of sweetened condensed milk. White streaks descend into the coffee in free-form exchanges of flavour and colour. New Orleans iced coffee is a treacle-thick concentrate of cold-brewed coffee stirred with sugar syrup, whole milk and ice.

Evaporated milk (unsweetened condensed milk) lends a faux milkshake effect to Greek frapp?, a corruption of the French milkshake classic caf? frapp?, from the French verb frapper - "iced" in a beverage context. With its thick head, Greek frapp? takes advantage of air-dried instant coffee's foaming properties while associating its processed taste with something cool and frothy. In Italy a frapp? al caff? is a shake of espresso, milk, sugar, vanilla and crushed ice ? something like Frappuccino without any additives. (Bottled Frappuccinos may contain pectin, a thickener, and maltodextrin, a sweetener).

For reasons of culture, geography or economics many of these milky iced coffees tend to be made with inferior robusta beans redolent of rubber or tar. It's a serious drawback. But even if prepared with the most aromatic arabicas they would still lack the clarity of an unadulterated brew. The plain black iced coffee Prufrock barista David Robson recently brewed in the Hario with Agogo Goroka, a coffee from Papua New Guinea, hit me with bright berry flavours. It proved to me that iced coffee can be, if not necessarily superior to hot filter coffee or espresso, then something different. And special.

I wonder, though, if others will prefer unadulterated iced coffee, either this one or those made with other coffees by other methods, to jazzier ones. Do you think milks and syrups merely provide cover for mediocre beans? Are you philosophically opposed to sugar on the grounds it masks a coffee's character? Or are you a mock-milkshake flavour freak who, if given a choice between caramel, mocha coconut, Tazo chai or plain coffee Frappuccino, zeroes in on the unflavoured coffee one as the first to eliminate from consideration?

Nursing home resident struck and abused, family videotapes alleged ...

As the American population matures, more and more people are looking to assisted living and nursing home care. Many families who have faced the decision of entrusting a loved one to the care of a professional facility diligently check out a number of facilities before finalizing the decision.

Even after due diligence, families may find certain signs exist that something may not be right after a loved one has entered a nursing home. Any seasoned Jersey City nursing home abuse lawyer would know that issues such as understaffing, negligent training or a lack of proper supervision can result in elder abuse or neglect.

In January 2009, the family of a 76-year-old woman decided to transfer the woman to a new nursing home facility. The family vetted the new location prior to the move. The daughter of the nursing home resident wished to move her mother to a facility closer to home. She and her mother were both involved in the decision-making process.

Last week the family held a news conference in their Pennsylvania community. The family called the news conference to voice their horror after they discovered the now 78-year-old nursing home resident had been the victim of abuse.

Early this year, the 78-year-old woman started suffering from advanced dementia. She was moved to a dementia unit within the upscale facility. Within three weeks after being transferred to the new unit, the woman started telling her daughter that she was being hurt at the facility. In early March, the woman told her daughter she was being hit.

The daughter took the information to management at the nursing home. By mid-March, management at the facility reported back to the family that there investigation found the abuse allegations were unfounded. Management attributed the allegations to the patient's dementia.

The daughter was not satisfied. She says "[w]e thought there was more to it."

Less than a week later the daughter and her husband visited the mother at the facility. The two could see the mother had bruises on her left hand and wrist. This time the family did not take the matter to administration at the facility. The family took photographs of the bruises and bought a nanny-cam hidden inside a clock.

A short time later the husband and wife watched a shocking video. The couple saw three employees allegedly taunting the partially naked nursing home resident. The mother tried to put on a long sleeve shirt. A worker reportedly is seen grabbing the shirt and the woman's arm. The worker is also allegedly seen in the tape hitting the resident.

The family did not go to administration with the photos and videotape. The family took the evidence to the police. Three workers at the facility have been criminally charged for the abuse. The family intends to file a civil lawsuit related to the nursing home abuse.

Josh Moshier is a 24-year-old pianist, composer and occasional political activist. Late in the 2008 presidential campaign, riding home to Chicago from Iowa, Moshier picked up a paper and read that Studs Terkel had died. Moshier is too young to remember Turkel's radio shows on Chicago's WFMT between 1952 and 1997, and was not yet familiar with his oral histories such as Working, Hard Times and The Good War. But he decided to learn more about Terkel, and he liked what he read, especially Division Street USA.

"I think it's because, being in Chicago, [I'm] familiar with a lot of the landmarks and symbolism that he talks about," Moshier said, explaining that Terkel "posits that Division Street Chicago is symbolic of the divisions, socioeconomic and racial divisions, in America. I also read They All Sang, his interviews with musicians and performers. And then I read his two memoirs, Talking to Myself and Touch and Go."

Moshier found connections. As Terkel worked with stories, Moshier creates songs with melody as narrative. As Terkel sequenced his stories to create an arc, Moshier balances composition with improvisation, the individual with the group. He began to envision his own Touch and Go music that "touches the ground as in landing and immediately takes off again." Chamber Music America awarded him a composition grant, and the process began.

At Sunday rehearsals with the Moshier-Lebrun Collective, Moshier would introduce new music, then listen to the band's response. (Like Terkel, always listening.) Moshier and saxophonist Mike Lebrun had formed the group in 2007 as undergraduates at Northwestern University. When they had time back then, they hung out at Pete Miller's Steakhouse in Evanston for the music. They soaked up pianist Ron Perrillo's harmonic freedom and guitarist Bobby Broom's dynamic group interplay. Moshier laments that those long-running gigs have ended, but he champions those Chicago players and their influence.

I asked Moshier how authentic it is for him to create music inspired by Studs Terkel, whom he did not know, and he answered with conviction.

"I do think that it's terrifying when your music is associated with someone that is so beloved, but I think that as musicians we need those challenges," Moshier said. says "We need our music to be about something. That's not to say that music can't just exist on its own terms. I firmly believe that hearing beautiful music is beautiful. [But] I think that as far as drawing in listeners, it's so important that there's a story. I am super interested in telling great stories and doing that through instrumental music."

Our performance comes from Feb. 22, 2011, at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase. It begins with a quiet piano prelude, then the sax begins to speak out. Dialogues develop. Guest John Moulder on guitar makes his presence known. Doors open, the energy ratchets up to boisterous and even joyful, and doors close. The bass and drums ? John Tate and Jon Dietemyer ? are equal contributors.

I'm sure if he were here, Studs Terkel would want to talk about it. Musicians were among his heroes (listen to excerpts of his interview with Mahalia Jackson and Marian and Jimmy McPartland). Wow. To say this is one of the better Katy Perry pictures out there would be a lie. But it does offer insight into a different side of the voluptuous pop singer.

It's no "Born This Way" (or more appropriately, "Firework") but there's something endearing and encouraging about the cover KP's Last Friday Night.

Basically, kids, geeky glasses and orthodontic headgear won't keep you from being desirable and successful as heck someday. It probably gets better, nerds!

What to Do After Failing an MOT Check

Failing an MOT is an unfortunate fact of life and will happen to us all at some point. For those with older cars it is likely to occur every year that something gives cause for the car to fail its MOT. We all leave our cars at the garage during that annual ritual and keep our fingers crossed that the phone call comes with good news and only the nominal MOT test fee, but all too often the vehicle fails on something or another. The key to keeping stress free in this situation is accepting the news, taking the blow and assessing the most cost effective way to get your car safely back on the road.

Vital repairs only or recommended too?

One factor to consider when hearing what your MOT has failed on is whether you are going to get only the necessary repairs done, or take the mechanics advice and get recommended repairs made too. Sometimes issues such as tyre treads and windscreen wipers are at the bare minimum legal condition. The garage will let you drive away without having these issues rectified but bear in mind that this is putting off the problem until the next MOT, and the items are unlikely to last another year until then anyway. If your car has failed on a number of things and it is turning out to be a costly MOT, these recommended items could be put off until your next pay day however be vigilant and don't ignore the mechanics advice - they want you to be safe on the road.

Discuss what you are paying for

Mechanics usually provide mid range products which need replacing during an MOT. If for example you have been told you need new tyres or bulbs, ask whether the price would be reduced if you opted for the cheapest the garage provides. This is not always recommended as premium tyres will save you in efficiency costs in the long run, but if you are strapped for cash at the time it may help you to reduce the MOT repair cost and get your car back on the road.

Shop around

If you think the MOT repairs are extortionate or you question the fact that your car has failed, you can take the vehicle to another garage to another garage for a second opinion. They will often do a re-test for free and only charge for the test if you decide to get the repairs done there. This is why it is a good idea to book your cars MOT a few weeks before it expires, otherwise you will not legally be able to take your car on to the road to drive to another garage, and you'll limit your options.

Do your own sourcing for second hand parts

After being told during one fateful MOT that my car needed a new engine stump I was horrified at the cost of over ?300 and wondered just how I was going to stump up for that stump! However after calling around a few dealers, scrap yards and garages I managed to locate a second hand engine stump for less than ?100. After collecting the item myself and delivering it to the garage to fit it in my car I had made a massive saving. Don't forget this option when a mechanic tells you which car parts you need you may be able to locate them far more cheaply if you use second hand.
