In the Air: Now heat is on for BBC D-G interviews - Analysis ...

Ofcom said he went public to avoid any conflict of interest, but it?s thought the real reason is because he has been told he has been shortlisted. Monday was the deadline when the BBC Trust?s headhunters, Egon Zehnder, told applicants whether they would be interviewed. Candidates were warned that those who failed to make the shortlist would hear nothing. Daily Mail sketchwriter Quentin Letts, who applied, admits: ?I haven?t heard from them, so it looks like they may feel able to continue without my services. Unlike that Blairite Birtist Ed Richards, I am from the Right and not a broadcasting insider, so I was certainly starting at the back of the field.? Richards, first tipped here, is seen as the favourite. Tories are said to be keener on BBC head of vision George Entwistle. Interviews are expected as soon as next week.

*The sudden early exit of Sir Ian Gibson as Trinity Mirror chairman on Monday suddenly makes sense now that the editors of the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror, Richard Wallace and Tina Weaver, have been sacked in a shock move this morning. New chairman David Grigson, who stepped up this week, and the rest of the board approved the sackings as it pushes a new seven-day combined print and digital operation. It didn?t take long for Trinity Mirror to make Wallace a ?non-person?. An email sent to him at 10.30am, just minutes after his sacking was announced, bounced back with the message: ?There?s a problem with the recipient?s mailbox.? Grigson is now said to be moving fast to replace departing chief executive Sly Bailey. She is still in the job and devised the seven-day merger.

*BSkyB?s summer party next month will be at a restaurant by the Thames ? in contrast to last year?s splendour at the Foreign Office. Then, the News Corp takeover was set to go through, Sky staff could barely hide their delight at the prospect of their shares vesting, and James Murdoch and News International chief Rebekah Brooks both attended. Now Sky can?t put enough distance between itself and News Corp, its 39% shareholder, and the idea of a company linked to the Murdochs hosting a party on government property is unthinkable.

*Richard Desmond?s Channel 5 is claiming Celebrity Big Brother has helped the broadcaster win its biggest increase in terrestrial (ie, non-satellite) viewers aged 16-34 in a decade. Figures for the first four months of 2012 are said to show this young demographic is up 16%. C5?s ABC1 audiences are also up 12% ? said to be the largest rise of any terrestrial network in 10 years. But according to Broadcast magazine, C5?s overall audience share is marginally down on 2011.

*A sign glossy magazines are feeling the pinch ? or prudent pruning? Hearst, formerly NatMags, is selling travel-lifestyle magazine Coast to niche group Kelsey Publishing. Hearst is also transferring the licence to publish women?s mag Pyschologies to the same firm. Hearst recently bought a raft of titles from Hachette and says it wants to focus on its core portfolio which includes Good Housekeeping, Harpers Bazaar and Esquire. But life isn?t so easy judging by the fact the editors of Esquire and Harpers both quit in the space of 18 months to join the commercial world of branded content at Net A Porter.

Bargain Hunter's Guide to Affordable Car Insurance Policies

In, driving around the state without having obtained the prescribed car insurance is illegal and thus punishable by law. Such is the usual case not only in several states in the US, but in some other countries as well where elaborate transportation laws apply. While there may be drivers who view insurance policies as a whim of bureaucracy, it is worth noting that auto insurance policies have actually helped save thousands of people by cushioning the impact of road accidents on their finances. Hence, mandated or not, some drivers still choose to invest in this security.

The only logical reason why there are vehicle owners who never get their cars insured is that insurance policies today are mostly expensive. Much as they wanted to be financially secured when the dreaded road mishaps occur, it is the cost of availing the coverage that makes it difficult for them to consider having car insurance. However, what many people don?t know is that they can lower the prices of their preferred coverage if they choose to do so. Here is list of practical tips on how you can save on car insurance policies:

Minimize Risk ? This strategy actually falls under the category of self-insuring since the idea is to lower the insurance quote as much as one can afford. Through minimizing the odds of danger in your part and proving the insurers that you can very well handle your car on the road, the actuaries can give you reasonably priced premiums.
One way to lower the risk of getting into car accidents is to become a responsible driver. Always remember that every speeding ticket is a point against your insurance quote; it will reflect badly on your record and insurers may take you for a high-risk driver. In, they have this compulsory ?no-fault insurance system? which orders the insurers to pay for the damages to properties and injuries incurred regardless of whether the holders of auto insurance policies are responsible for the accident or not. The catch is that the drivers will never be paid for the damages to their own vehicles in the event of theft or a collision. This is why vehicle owners are often advised to take defensive driving lessons and precautionary measures to protect their cars if they do not wish to avail of a comprehensive insurance.

Do Comparative Shopping ? You don?t need to scour the local agencies in your area and do all the stressful footwork just to find a desirable insurance quote. All you have to do is search the web for online insurance providers and check the kinds of coverage that they offer. After studying each policy and weighing up your options, you can now choose which coverage is best for you, budget-wise.

Choose Your Car Wisely ? If it is your first time to drive a car, you should also consider the cost of insurance that your desired car is likely to be quoted. For drivers who want to add special coverage to their existing car insurance, it is best to insure the vehicles which are unlikely to figure in accidents.

'A few guys tainting the reputations'

Miami Dolphins MinicampGetty Images

Plenty of teams said ?no? to Hard Knocks, for various reasons.? The Dolphins agreed to do it.

On Tuesday, coach Joe Philbin discussed the situation, calling it a ?football decision.?

Seriously.

?We?re excited that NFL Films and HBO has chosen the Miami Dolphins to appear on Hard Knocks,? Philbin said, via the video box on the right rail of the site.? ?I want you to know a couple things about the decision.? Number one, it was a football decision.? It was made by the football operations staff.? Our owner, [Stephen Ross], supported our decision but in no way, shape, or form forced us to make this decision.?

Many will believe otherwise, especially since G.M. Jeff Ireland grew up in the Bill Parcells school of ultra-secrecy.

But as the Dolphins struggle to generate interest in the team via conventional means (you know, by winning more games than they lose), the team has to do something to get people sufficiently engaged to buy tickets to the games.? Thus, the Dolphins are now more available to the media ? and they?ll be even more available once the NFL Films cameras and microphones show up.

To the extent that the appearance arises from a football decision, Philbin didn?t really articulate a football reason.? He said the that show will ?showcase our players? and provide a ?great opportunity for us to communicate with our fans.?? While those concerns reflect prudent business reasons, there?s no obvious basis for the move, from a football standpoint.

In contrast, Vince Lombardi liked having NFL Films camera crews around because it made his players work harder.? If that?s the basis for the ?football decision,? why not say so?

And so the Dolphins will deny that the move was driven by dollars and cents, and the rest of us won?t believe them.? But at least we finally know who the team will be, even if the end result likely will be far less compelling than if the Jets, Saints, Broncos, Colts, or Redskins had done it.

New signs of global slowdown darken analyst's economic outlook

Data released this week may show new signs of a global slowdown. But one analyst isn't surprised. From the tech bubble burst to the housing collapse to the resurgence of gold, he's been (mostly) right. Not that he's saying 'I told you so.'

By Bill Bonner,?Guest blogger / May 30, 2012

Data released this week may show new signs of a global slowdown, leading one analyst to think his darkest predictions may have been right all along. In a May 2012 file photo, a sign offering help in foreclosure cases stands by a street in Pembroke Pines, Fla.

But the brain never quite gets in sync. When it looks at what those soldiers were doing, it wishes they had never left home. America?s wars were almost all ?wars of choice,? says a friend. ?They were fought to expand the power of the empire. The Mexican-American war was a bald-faced grab for Mexican land. The ?Civil War? was a battle to bring the South into submission. The US took Puerto Rico and the Philippines in the Spanish American war. President Wilson took the US into WWI simply to throw our weight around in Europe; we had no dog in that fight. He botched up the peace so badly that the Europeans went to war again 20 years later to sort it out. That was a war ? WWII in Europe ? that the US didn?t have to get involved in either.

?And then there was Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan?and hundreds of sleazy assassinations, tawdry meddles and rank ops. They all increased the reach and power of the military-led empire?but the price was paid by the Old Republic, which is now almost extinct.?

Mr. Obama can start a war with whomever he pleases?no vote of the people?s elected representatives needed (as if that would make any difference).

Frankly, we never much cared for the empire. We liked the Old Republic, as it was meant to be. So, we didn?t festoon our house with red, white and blue, celebrating the success of the US empire, this Memorial Day. Instead, we hung black crepe?and mourned the loss of America.

And what?s this?? A headline that caught our eye:

100 Million Americans Without Jobs?

Business Insider reports:

The national unemployment rate gets lots of attention, and lately more attention has been paid to the workforce participation rate since more Americans have given up looking for a job, but we can also see that an astounding 100 million Americans don?t have jobs? According to the April jobs report, the number of jobless American stood at 100.9 million.

Let?s see?that?s about one in three Americans actually working. And how many of them have productive jobs? It depends on what you mean.

Do you mean jobs that actually increase the supply of goods and services that make up our real wealth? If so, you have to take out all the people who are doing zombie jobs?

You may be thinking of people working for the government?paper pushers whose contribution to national prosperity is marginal, or even negative. What about all the TSA agents who are feeling up nuns and radiating grandmothers? And what about people who work for the zombie industries ? like ?Government Motors??funded by the feds?or Solyndra, which got a $535 million loan, guaranteed by the feds?or the Bank of America, kept in business by Fed bailouts?or any one of dozens of companies whose revenues come almost entirely from the feds? Do any of them add to the nation?s wealth? Net? Probably not.

So, out of a population of 311,000,000 how many are carrying the load?

Maybe 50 million. One in 6. The rest are zombies. Or retired. In school. Disabled. Or just goofing off.

Land of the free? RIP.

Darn! Day after day, the Dow is headed down.

Finally, on Thursday of last week, stocks caught a break. The end of a long losing streak. But then?on Friday?down again, with a 74 point loss for the Dow.

Gold lost money too. Oil closed right on the $90 mark.

What?s going on? The Wall Street Journal reports:

New signs of a global slowdown are darkening the economic outlook.

On Thursday, the US reported that businesses were slowing their orders of computers, aircraft, machinery and other long-lasting goods. Measures of business sentiment in Europe slipped, and reports from purchasing managers at manufacturers around the globe turned down. Among them, China, the world?s second-largest economy, registered its seventh straight drop in an important manufacturing index.

A slew of data this week suggests that the global economy is slowing down.

With the latest reports, a new economic threat is emerging: That activity is slowing in sync around the globe and not just in a few markets with their own isolated problems. Europe, struggling with the risk of a Greek pullout from the euro area and broader fiscal problems, is the epicenter of global economic concerns right now. But reports of economic trouble are turning up in China, India, South Africa, Brazil and elsewhere.

When the global economy is performing well, synchronized growth reinforces itself and spreads prosperity wide and far. But slowdowns can become interconnected and self-reinforcing, and the global economy has been plagued by them since the financial crisis of 2008.

A synchronized worldwide slowdown? Bummer!

But hey, dear reader, would you reach out and pat us on the back?

In 1999, we said the tech bubble was going to pop. We made fun of the techies.

And guess what? We were right. Tech blew up?and never came back.

Okay?okay?we were wrong about some things. We called Amazon the ?River of No Returns.? Well?Amazon has done quite well. But where?s Global Crossing? And Pets.com? Boo.com? GeoCities? All dead and gone.

We urged dear readers to buy gold, not stocks. If they had done that they would be way ahead. Stocks went nowhere for the next 10 years. Gold went up 5 times.

Dear readers who got all golded up would have dodged the housing bubble, too. Sell your expensive house, we urged dear readers in 2005 and 2006?and rent! That turned out to be good advice, as the bubble blew up in 2007 and has been in tatters ever since.

When the recession of ?09 hit, economists and pundits wondered what shape the recovery would be. V? or W? We said it would be an L. Down?then dragging across the floor for a very long time.

A real recovery was ?impossible,? we said, choosing our words recklessly?but correctly. It was impossible for a debt-soaked economy to recover until the debt had been squeezed out, we said.

Well, here we are, 5 years after the crisis hit, and we?re still at the bottom of the L. Debt is still being wrung out of the private sector?while the feds pour it on the public sector as fast as they can.

Right again! The economy bumps along the bottom?with persistent high unemployment, record low bond yields, and ?growth? that is more a product of government gas than real, honest GDP building.

So, what are we going to be wrong about?

Here?s our hunch: that the bottom of this L stretches out for a long, long time. Maybe 10 more years. Maybe 20. Maybe 100.

We?ve got a whole theory to back this up. But since we?re just back from a long weekend we?ll save it for tomorrow!

Regards,

Bill Bonner,

Best Beach Reads 2012: Green Home And Gardening Books For The Summer

From Mother Nature Network's Matt Hickman:

Now that I have my first official sunburn of the season ? a 5-mile bike ride followed by a few rounds of skee ball on the boardwalk will do that to you ? I thought it would be appropriate to feature a few items that I'm eyeing for one of my favorite non-biking/skee ball-related summertime activities: catching up on my reading.

Below you'll find a dozen freshly (or fresh-ish) released or soon-to-be-released summer books covering sustainable home design, building and architecture, gardening, and renovation/remodeling. I've also included hotly anticipated releases from both the first lady of the United States and the first lady of home decor catalog snark, Molly Erdman (seriously, if you've never met "Gary" and "Elaine" before, than this summer is the perfect time to do so). While they may not be ideal beach reads in terms of physical size and subject matter, there's nothing stopping you from settling down with these inspirational and informative tomes out on the porch swing, backyard hammock, or from the comfort of a bench in a local park.

Is there a green home- or garden-centric book that you're looking forward to plowing through spending some quality time with this summer?

Searching for Partners

Hello!

I'm a long time roleplayer (about 10 years on and off), and I've been actively maintaining a few roleplays via e-mail for several years. Unfortunately, all but one has died, and I like to keep 2-3 roleplays going at a time to keep my creative juices flowing. I'm a 21 year old female college student. I play sports and stay on top of my studies, but unfortunately, business majors don't have a whole lot of time to write creatively, and this is my outlet. (Just for a little bit of background on me).

I am relatively active, fortunately I work from home, so I can reply while working, and I'm only taking a few courses over the summer. Needless to say, I need entertained! Most of my friends are interning away for the summer, and my internship happened to be from the comfort of my home office. But, I'm looking for a long term, committed partner. If we are going to go through the troubles of starting up a roleplay, I want it to stick for a while. So if it only mildly interests you/ you plan on not contributing, please don't bother inquiring.

Some quick things
1. Please, please, please be over the age of 18. Being 21 myself, I feel awkward roleplaying with anyone that is my younger brother's age.
2. Tell me your limits. I have none, and I will assume you don't either, unless otherwise stated.
3. I'd prefer this take place over e-mail as I am frequently traveling and reply from my phone. If that is not possible, then it will take place on this board. Either PM or a thread, at your discretion.
4. Please be active. A post or two a day would be nice. You can expect at least 3 out of me a day, depending on the day.
5. Be creative, be willing to contribute to the plot and direct your own character. I can't stand piolting and entire RP by myself. Also, you should be able to post about 3 well thought out paragraphs (proper spelling and grammar most of the time would be appreciated).
6. Holler and let me know if you're going to be out of town/want to quit the roleplay at anytime. I don't like being abandoned.
7. If we set up a 'plot', I don't intend on us following it strictly. I use plots as a very VERY loose guideline for the roleplay, but I just sort of let it take it's natural course. Personally, I know I don't 'control' my characters, they sort of control me.
8. Character profiles are fine, or we can skip them. That will be up to us when we discuss further.
9. Be willing to play both male and female characters. I frequently introduce characters throughout the roleplay, and I can easily play both genders (both as primary and secondary characters). If you're only willing to play female or male, I probably won't roleplay with you. And with that said, I like to play characters in their early to late twenties. Please no highschool roleplays.
10. HAVE FUN! Talk to me OOC, or whatever else. I promise I'm nice. And rules are no fun :)

Loose Based Plot Ideas
1. He's lost his fiance, his highschool sweetheart, the most beautiful woman he ever laid eyes on. He's broken, he's devastated and can't bring himself to do much beyond his daily routine of working as a marketing director. That's when he's paired up with her,to conduct a research project, the girl that over time is going to flip his world upside down. But are they really that good for each other? She's snarky and witty, and he's sarcastic and slightly off-putting. When they're good, they're great, but when they're off..well, they fight like hell. (I'm willing to play either character.)
2. College should be the time of your life, no? Well it isn't for Kailyn Evans*. She studies too hard, she's at school on an academic scholarship and she works a full time job just to support her cost of living. She's maintaining a 4.0 at one of the most prestigious universities in the nation; Cornell. He's there because his parents are incredibly rich and have paid his way through...everything. He's there for the party and the girls, not for the education. Then he meets Kailyn, at first, getting the uptight girl to let her hair down seems like a fun game to him, but then, they begin to fall for each other. Her grades begin to slip and a relationship starts to over power everything. Will she be what's good for him? Or will he be the complete demise of Kailyn? (I'd prefer to play Kailyn, simply because she's a brainchild of mine).

Both plots are obviously very loose, I don't intend on us following it exactly. In fact, lets have fun with it! Also, I would LOVE to hear your ideas. (realistic only, please. The world is not ready to see my supernatural writing.) So please, post here or contact me via PM and we will discuss further.

Microsoft posts Windows 8 app porting guide roundup, forgets to include BASIC

Let's say you're a developer eager to convert your apps for Windows 8 as soon as possible. Where do you start? Microsoft Developer Evangelist Jennifer Marsman is very much aware that you might be at a loss, so she has done the rather large favor of rounding up every porting guide the company has to offer in one handy place. Some of these are pure design guides, like a previously spotted iPad-to-Metro layout article, but others dig deep into converting code for the land of home tiles and charms. The focus is on porting from the web and Windows Phone 7, so we wouldn't work up hopes of bringing your high school computer class project to Metro. Still, Marsman is looking for more guides from readers; if you've developed just the technique to convert 10 PRINT "HELLO WORLD" 20 GOTO 10 into a tablet-native Windows 8 app, return the generosity and leave pointers at the source link.

Former NFL Player Bobby Sippio Arrested on Attempted Murder Charge in Florida

Former NFL Player Bobby Sippio, who has seemingly bounced around every professional league with the exception of the Lingerie Football League, was arrested Thursday night after kidnapping, beating and threatening to kill his girlfriend?s brother.

The details from the Orlando Sentinel

Sippio, 31, picked up Sergio Moore, 27, from his apartment in Orlando about 11 p.m. Thursday, an Osceola sheriff?s report shows. Moore told deputies he thought he was going to help Sippio and his friend Santana Coats, 30, move furniture.

Instead, Sippio pulled a gun out of the center console, Moore told investigators. Moore tried to open the door and the windows, but they apparently had been locked on the driver?s side.

Sippio drove to a rural section of Osceola County off Poinciana Boulevard ? Sippio is a former Osceola High School Kowboys quarterback ? and forced Moore out of the car in a pasture off Oren Brown Road, a sheriff?s report states.

There, Coats and the 6-foot-4-inch, 215-pound Sippio punched and kicked Moore and Coats pointed the gun at him, he told deputies. Sippio told Moore that his sister could not save him, a sheriff?s report states.

After the beating, Coats and Sippio continued to terrorize Moore with the gun as they drove him home, according to deputies. Sippio and Moore are roommates, investigators said.

Moore sustained a broken nose, a swollen left hand and wrist and lacerations to the top of his head and cheek. Law officers interviewed him about 4:45 a.m. Friday at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Sippio played the last two seasons with the Orlando Predators of the Arena League, spent some time in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions. He is the second cousin of Chiefs star Dwayne Bowe.

President Obama Weekly Address May 26, 2012

Even as we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, we reaffirm our commitment to care for those who served alongside them?the veterans who came home. This includes our newest generation of veterans, from Iraq and Afghanistan.

We have to serve them and their families as well as they have served us: By making sure that they get the healthcare and benefits they need; by caring for our wounded warriors and supporting our military families; and by giving veterans the chance to go to college, find a good job, and enjoy the freedom that they risked everything to protect.
