Ultrasonic Flowmeters

A Flowmeters is a device for measuring, monitoring, or recording the rate of flow, pressure, or discharge of a liquid, as of a gas.

An Ultrasonic Flowmeter is a type of flow meter that measures the flow of a liquid, gas or steam by using the principle of ultrasound. The flow meter can measure the average velocity along the path of an emitted beam of ultrasound, by averaging the difference in measured transit time between the pulses of ultrasound propagating into and against the direction of the flow. Ultrasonic Flowmeters are affected by the pressure, temperature, density and viscosity of the flowing medium.

There are three different types of Ultrasonic flow meters.

  1. Transmission flowmeters, which can be distinguished into In-line flowmeters and Non-Intrusive flowmeters.
  2. Reflection or Doppler flow meters.
  3. Open-Channel flowmeter.

Ultrasonic Flowmeters such as In-line Flowmeters are Multivariable Flowmeters as it is used for the measurement of liquid, gas or steam in industrial applications for the water and wastewater treatment plant, chemical and petrochemical, oil and gas, power, pharmaceutical, paper, food and beverage industries.

Multivariable In-line Flowmeters, are used for Volumetric or mass flow monitoring of most liquids, gases or steam. Multivariable In-line Vortex flowmeters utilizes three primary sensing elements, a vortex shedding velocity sensor, a temperature sensor, and a pressure sensor to measure the mass flow rate of liquids, gases or steam.

In-line Vortex flowmeters operates in a following manner:

  • It measure flow of liquids, gas and steam by detecting the frequency at which vortices are alternatively shed from a bluff body.
  • As flow passes a bluff body in the flow stream, vortex meter, the vortices create low and high pressure zones behind the bluff body, or shedder bar.
  • In-line Flowmeters uses a piezoelectric crystal sensor to detect the pressure exerted by the vortices on the velocity sensor.
  • The piezoelectric crystal converts these "pulses" into electrical signals. The meter uses a sensor designed to create a robust sensor and to minimize potential leaks.

In-line Flowmeters are classified into the following models:

  4. Pro-V? Model M22-EM
  5. Pro-V Model M22-R

The Model M22-Redundant flowmeter offers dual flowmeters within the same pipe spool for critical flow applications or where a backup system is required.
