Home Sweet Home on a Budget: Kitchen Cabinet Makeovers ...

It's Saturday, and Ruth is here from A House in Holland to share budget-friendly home improvement ideas.

If you've ever been through a kitchen remodel or even considered doing one, then you are probably aware that new cabinetry can take a big chunk out of your remodeling budget. ?Sometimes it is necessary to tear out the old cabinets and install brand new versions, if the originals are in poor condition or if the new ?kitchen has architectural changes that require new cabinetry. ?But gutting the room and installing brand new cabinetry isn't the only option if your goal is to refresh the look of the kitchen you have, within its existing footprint. ?You can save thousands and thousands of dollars on a kitchen renovation by giving your cabinetry a facelift, DIY style.

Here's an example taken from the kitchen in my very first house. ?When we purchased the house, the kitchen was desperately in need of updates. ?While the original cabinets had a lot of charm and vintage character, there just weren't enough of them to make it a workable kitchen. Since we were short on funds, we went ahead and used as many of the old cabinets as we could, painted them white, and added new cabinets in a style that would complement the originals.

Can you tell which of these cabinets are new, and which are original to the 1949 cottage?

If you guessed the open cabinetry on the upper right, you are correct! ?Since I was especially excited about the pretty scrollwork over the sink, we kept the two upper cabinets. ?We removed the doors and painted everything a bright white to match the new cabinetry.

I'm not the only one who's found a way to transform a kitchen with a DIY cabinet makeover. ?You are right on trend if you are a blogger who is painting your cabinetry, these days. ?Seriously, though, refreshing your cabinets with new paint or stain is a money saving alternative to buying all new. ?I've found some great ideas out there for making big changes to your cabinetry--both outside and in. ??Check out these before and after pictures of fantastic cabinet makeovers from bloggers like you, and make sure you click over to the linked blogs to find out exactly how they did it.
