NY Times ... - An Exploration of Portland Oregon Food and Drink

After two years as the NY Times restaurant critic, Sam Sifton has been promoted to the editor of the paper?s national desk. Sam took the difficult job after Frank Bruni, who held the job for 2003 to 2009. From executive editor, Jill Abramson,

Sam Sifton will be our new National editor. From his star runs at Dining and Culture, we all know that Sam is a superb editor who brings infectious energy and a host of original ideas, digital and print, to everything he touches. Correspondents and critics adore him. So who better to fill the shoes of Rick Berke? Sam?s background here isn?t hard news, but we all saw the newsiness and urgency he brought to the Culture report. He takes over a superb desk that flawlessly handles the fastest-breaking and challenging news stories. This will be very sad news to his devoted fans as our brilliant dining critic, but Sam, a lover of regional food, looks forward to dining adventures with the National correspondents. It will be thrilling to watch him apply his editing and writing talents to the National report.

I loved reading Bruni?s reviews every week, but Sifton never made it to my ?must-read? list. It just seemed like something was missing. The big question now is, who will fill the opening? In recent history, The Times has filled the position with staffers from elsewhere in the paper. That has made it more difficult for them to be anonymous. It will be interesting to see who they pick to fill his vacancy.

Meanwhile, The Chicago Sun Times has fired Pat Bruno, their restaurant critic for 27-years. Bruno was an old-time journalist, known more for being curmudgeonly, rather than his reviews. What are his plans now? To start a food blog. Cough. You aren?t going to support yourself with that.

I need to sit down and write about the state of food critics in general ? it?s a sad picture.
